The Severn is a new two-way reflex-loaded floor-standing loud- speaker from Castle Acoustics. Standing 770mm (30in) high and with a small 'footprint', it has newly developed drive units—a 130mm long-throw bass/midrange driver (30mm diameter voice-coil wound on a Kapton former, with a vented pole-piece and 1-2 Tesla magnet) and a polyamide-laminated soft-dome tweeter (ferro-fluid cooled 25mm voice-coil, Kapton former, moulded Castle fascia plate with a short horn). The cabinet is divided into two by a sloping partition one third of the way up. This creates an idealized enclosure for the bass/midrange driver and a separate compartment at the bottom to house the crossover (the input terminals are thus low down, avoid- ing an unsightly run of cables down the rear of the cabinet). The cabinet is made of 18mm MDF (Medite) and has rounded corner edges. Fitted with a plinth (floor spikes are provided) the Severn is designed to be operated in free space. It has a sensitivity of 87dB/W/m, a power handling capability of 110W and a maxi- mum output spl of 107dB. In very good condition.
